"Why Volunteering Abroad Is the Change We All Need"

Volunteering abroad is an excellent way to widen your perspectives while making a positive difference. It provides an opportunity to learn new skills, immerse yourself in diverse cultures, and contribute to significant causes in communities across the globe. Personally, I enjoy volunteering to bring attention to communities that are sometimes overlooked. I believe this unique experience can help individuals discover themselves, develop a better understanding of the world and create a long-lasting sense of purpose.
During my visit to Cartagena, Colombia in October of 2018, I had the privilege of volunteering for a day with Julie Gonzelez Gueto, the founder of Fundacion Koinonia, a non-profit organization devoted to improving the lives of children and adolescents in the informal housing community of La Loma, Colombia. Witnessing Ms. Gueto's resourcefulness and determination in providing weekly educational ideas and activities for the children in spite of limited resources left me in awe. However, the organization is currently lacking art supplies, books, snacks, and sports equipment, which are essential to keep the kids engaged and thriving.
